Maths at Skerne Park Academy

Our Vision

At Skerne Park Academy we aim to develop in children;

  • A positive attitude to mathematics as an interesting and valuable subject with a love of number and the aspiration to solve problems.
  • An understanding of mathematics through a process of higher order thinking which involves enquiry, reasoning and problem solving.
  • The ability to learn a range of strategies: working both cooperatively, collaboratively and independently.
  • Confidence in mathematics where children can express ideas fluently and talk about the subject using mathematical language.
  • An understanding of the importance of mathematics in everyday life and how it helps them to help build their future.

The national curriculum for mathematics reflects the importance of spoken language in pupils development across the whole curriculum cognitively, socially and linguistically. The quality and variety of language that pupils hear and speak are key factors in developing their mathematical vocabulary and presenting mathematical justification, argument or proof. They must be assisted in making their thinking clear to themselves as well as others and teachers ensure that pupils build secure foundations by using maths talk to probe and remedy their misconceptions.

As Mathematics is such an important life skill, we have not only embraced the new curriculum, but we have introduced a new ‘Maths Cycle’ approach to our lessons which allow children to explore new mathematical concepts using the CPA (Concrete, Pictoral and Abstract) methods. To support us in the teaching of the maths curriculum we follow the White Rose scheme of work.
