Hello, my name is Sarah Rose and I am Chair of the Skerne Park Academy (SPA) Local Governing Body (LGB). I extend a warm welcome to all visitors to the Governors’ Page of the school’s website.
Governors are a body of people with a rich variety of knowledge, skills and understanding who work alongside the school’s Senior Leadership Team to ensure that the school provides its pupils with the very best care and education. The LGB is made up of people recruited from the wider community (community governors), parents (parent governors) and from among the teachers and other staff of the school (teacher and staff governors). The Headteacher is also a member of the LGB.
The governors fulfil a strategic rather than a day-to-day role within the school. They work tirelessly to support the school’s highest aspirations and to improve its performance through their responsibility to provide informed challenge and to engage in regular monitoring of data about, for example, pupil attainment, progress and attendance.
We meet about a dozen times a year, sometimes as the full LGB (usually twice a term) and sometimes as committees with fewer members than the whole LGB with responsibility for specific aspects of the school’s responsibilities (e.g. health and safety).
Anyone accessing this page who would be interested in joining the SPA LGB should contact in the first instance either the Headteacher, Sarah Hardy, or me. We are happy to discuss at a time convenient to all concerned what in more detail the role of governor entails, but the following may in this respect be helpful:
School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher, and often assist with other appointments. It is governors who hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, and it is governors who work with the Headteacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources.
Each individual governor at SPA is a member of the LGB, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors cannot act independently as decisions are the joint responsibility of the whole LGB.
The role of the LGB is a strategic one. Its key functions are to:
- Set the aims and objectives for our school
- Set the policies for achieving the aims and objectives
- Set the targets for achieving the aims and objectives
- Monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making toward achievement of its aims and objectives
- Be a source of challenge and support to the Headteacher (or, to put it another way, be the Headteacher’s critical friend).
